Monte Kwinter, Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services, today welcomed the recommendations of the coroner's jury into the death of Patrick Shand.
"Our condolences go out to his family," Kwinter said. "I look forward to studying the recommendations. They come at a time when we are considering changes to the Private Investigators and Security Guards Act, which has not been significantly updated in more than 35 years."
Shand died of injuries received during an altercation with store employees and security guards outside a Scarborough grocery store on Sept. 14, 1999, during an alleged shoplifting incident.
The Private Investigators and Security Guards Act governs the private security industry. The Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services is consulting on changes to the legislation with those who have an interest in the private security industry, including security firms and police services.
The consultations are looking into three main areas:
Legislation could be introduced as early as this fall.
